Safety tips for dating with confidence

Practical guidance for staying safe before you match, while chatting, and when you meet in person. Built for the realities of dating in India.

Troobondr – verified dating built on trust and respect

Before you match

Check verification badges and avoid low-quality or pushy profiles.

While chatting

Keep conversations on the app and never share sensitive personal details.

Meeting in person

Public places, own transport, live location sharing, and clear check-ins.

Before you match

  • Look for verified profile badges before swiping right.
  • Skip profiles that only have one blurry photo, no visible face, or pictures that look like stock images.
  • Avoid users whose bios primarily contain links or immediate demands to message them on WhatsApp or Instagram.

Troobondr's government-ID verification and Trust Score make it easier to spot authentic profiles from the start. Learn more on our Safety & Trust page.

While chatting

  • Keep your conversation on the app until you have met in person and feel completely comfortable.
  • Do not share your phone number, home address, exact workplace details, or daily location patterns.
  • Never share OTPs, passwords, bank details, or photos of ID documents like your Aadhaar or PAN card.
  • Avoid sending explicit photos — scammers frequently use these for blackmail and extortion.

Before meeting in person

  • Do a quick video call within the app to confirm your match looks like their profile pictures.
  • Run a reverse-image search on their profile photos if their lifestyle or appearance feels too good to be true.
  • Tell a trusted friend or family member exactly who you are meeting, where you are going, and when you expect to return.

Meeting in person

  • Always choose a busy, well-lit public place like a café or mall for your first few dates.
  • Arrange your own transportation to and from the date; do not get into a match's vehicle.
  • Share your live location with a trusted friend and agree on a specific time to check in with them.
  • Keep your drink with you at all times and stay sober enough to leave on your own terms.

You can also use Troobondr's Emergency Panic Button if you ever feel unsafe during or after a date.

Protecting your money

  • Never send money, crypto, or gift cards to someone you haven't met in person — even if they claim it is a medical or travel emergency.
  • Decline any invitations from a match to trade stocks, invest in crypto, or join a “guaranteed return” scheme. Romance-to-investment scams are a known and growing pattern in India.
  • Do not accept packages or agree to pay “customs clearance fees” for expensive gifts your match claims to have sent from abroad.

Digital arrest & impersonation awareness

  • Genuine police, CBI, customs, or court officials will never make an arrest, issue a warrant, or demand bail money via WhatsApp, Skype, or video call.
  • If a match — or someone claiming to be an official connected to them — threatens you with a “digital arrest,” disconnect immediately.
  • Never pay “fines” or transfer money to “secure” your bank account under pressure from an unexpected phone call.

Red flags

  • Watch out for “love-bombing” — someone declaring deep, intense feelings or talking about marriage within just a few days of chatting.
  • Be cautious if they constantly make excuses to avoid video calls or meeting up in person.
  • Notice if they aggressively pressure you to move the chat off-platform to Telegram or WhatsApp immediately.
  • Pay attention to inconsistent stories about their background, job, or hometown.

If something feels wrong

  • Use the in-app Block and Report feature the moment someone makes you uncomfortable — they will not be notified.
  • Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or visit cybercrime.gov.in to report financial fraud or cyber blackmail.
  • Dial the Women Helpline at 181 for support against abuse, threats, or harassment.
  • Call Emergency 112 if you feel you are in immediate physical danger.

Something feel off? Report it in-app or call the National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930.

Sources & further reading

  • The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs frequently issues advisories regarding the sharp rise in “pig butchering” or romance-investment scams originating on dating and social media platforms.
  • The MHA and I4C have issued nationwide alerts clarifying that no Indian law enforcement agency conducts “digital arrests” or demands investigative payments over video calls.
